The Municipality of Heraklion invited the Institute of Computer Science – Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (ICS-FORTH) to participate in the 6th China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair (CSITF 2018), the world’s largest technology exhibition with nearly 1.000 exhibitors from 40 countries and 6.000 technologies from all around the world, with Heraklion enjoying the distinction of being an “Honored City”.
This holiday season, the Institute of Computer Science of Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (ICS-FORTH) participates as sponsor in the “Christmas Castle” celebrations, organized by the Municipality of Heraklion, and offers visitors a chance to travel in the magical world of Christmas through innovative interactive applications.
At the entrance of the “Christmas castle”, visitors are welcomed by a novel system that combines a mechanical speaking doll with videos of flight over the city of Heraklion, the sleigh of Santa Claus with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer ready to guide it. Rudolph invites children to become Santa Claus’ assistants and deliver presents to everyone in Heraklion, through a virtual interactive trip over the city center.
The innovative services that were designed and developed by the HCI laboratory of ICS-FORTH in order to facilitate digital service delivery for the Region of Crete, were nominated for the final jury decision of the European Public Sector Awards (EPSA 2017) set by the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA), in the “Regional” category.
EIPA is the leading centre of European learning and development for the public sector. It was created in 1981 on the occasion of the first European Council held in Maastricht, and is supported by the EU Member States and the European Commission.
The mobile electrical vehicle unit featuring three interactive systems designed and developed by ICS-FORTH, was the main attraction on display during the four-day “En plo (At sea)” exhibition, 15th to 19th of June 2017, at the entrance of the Venetian harbour. The event was an initiative of the association of inflatable dinghies and boats of Crete, under the auspices of the Port Authority of Heraklion.

Just like we need to exercise our body muscles to be healthy and strong, so we need to exercise our creativity in order to keep it in a good shape and not let it weaken as years go by. The Creative Thinking Gymnastics (CTGs) is an engaging and fun participative experience which large multigenerational groups can enjoy together. It comprises a series of entertaining exercises coaching many major ‘muscle groups’ of creative thinking (e.g., curiosity, imagination, open-mindedness, inventiveness, unconventionality, stupidity, nonsense). All exercises use commonplace and inexpensive materials such as a pen, blank sheets of paper, paper napkins, etc.
The program has been presented in several schools both in Greece and abroad. On March 31st, 2017, it participated in the Athens Science Festival 2017 in Technopolis Gazi, Greece.
The opening ceremony of Messara Valley Tourist Information Center was held on Sunday, March 19th 2017 in the Saint Nektarios Cultural Center.
Stavros Arnaoutakis, the Regional Governor of Crete, officially launched the new Center, which is now open to the public after a year of pilot operation.
