Heraklion Gastronomy

The Institute of Computer Science of Foundation for Research and Technology -Hellas (ICS-FORTH) successfully implemented and delivered to the Municipality of Heraklion the project “Creation of a unified visitor information system for the Municipality of Heraklion (INFO point & INFO kiosks) and development of a personalized information application “Heraklion Gastronomy”.

In the framework of the project, an augmented reality application was developed with the aim of presenting thematic routes that start from the city of Heraklion and extend to the hinterland. At the same time, a total of four (4) information kiosks were installed: one (1) in the city center of Heraklion and three (3) in villages in the mainland. To support the interactive systems, the ICS-FORTH undertook the production and editing of original multimedia content, which was integrated into the corresponding applications and infrastructures.

The ultimate goal of the project is to connect tourist information with the historical and cultural identity of the Municipality of Heraklion, presenting an alternative perspective that is not limited only to the history of the place, as reflected in monuments and archaeological finds, but also extends to the specific cultural characteristics of each region. These include the way of life, customs and traditions, legends and traditions, dietary habits, as well as the production of local products.
