European Public Sector Awards 2017

Maastricht

The innovative services that were designed and developed by the HCI laboratory of ICS-FORTH in order to facilitate digital service delivery for the Region of Crete, were nominated for the final jury decision of the European Public Sector Awards (EPSA 2017) set by the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA), in the “Regional” category.

Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Interfaces and Human Computer Interaction 2017 to researchers of the Institute of Computer Science of FORTH

The paper entitled “ACTA: A GENERAL PURPOSE FINITE STATE MACHINE (FSM) DESCRIPTION LANGUAGE FOR SMART GAME DESIGN”, presented by Dr. Emmanouil Zidianakis, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Human Computer – Interaction Laboratory of ICS-FORTH, received the Best Paper Award at the 11th International Conference on Interfaces and Human Computer Interaction, 21 – 23 July 2017, Lisbon, Portugal.

This work presents ACTA (ACTivity Analysis), a general purpose finite state machine (FSM) description language for rapid prototyping of smart games. ACTA facilitates smart game design by professionals who are not familiar with traditional programming languages. Professionals are able to model the game’s logic and interaction using a straightforward and intuitive notation which can be customized for every different game.

Best Paper Award at the eLmL 2013 International Conference to researchers of the Institute of Computer Science of FORTH

The paper entitled “AmI-RIA: Real-Time Teacher Assistance Tool for an Ambient Intelligence Classroom”, presented by Asterios Leonidis, PhD Candidate at the University of Crete and member of the Human Computer Interaction Laboratory of ICS-FORTH, received the Best Paper Award at the 5th International Conference on Mobile, Hybrid, and On-line Learning (eLmL 2013, Nice, France, 24 February – 1 March 2013).

This work focuses on Ambient Intelligence technologies in the domain of learning and education, and proposes a learner-centric approach to support instructors in improving the learning process in ambient educational environments. The developed system introduces an intelligent multi-agent infrastructure that monitors unobtrusively the students’ activities and notifies the teacher, in real-time, about potential learning weaknesses and pitfalls that need to be addressed.

The paper’s authors are: Georgios Mathioudakis, Asterios Leonidis, Maria Korozi, Georgios Margetis, Stavroula Ntoa, Dr. Margherita Antona (Human Computer – Interaction Laboratory of ICS-FORTH), and Professor Constantine Stephanidis (ICS-FORTH and University of Crete).

Best Student Paper Award at the PECCS 2013 International Conference to researchers of the Institute of Computer Science of FORTH

The paper entitled “Programming Smart Object Federations for Simulating and Implementing Ambient Intelligence Scenarios”, presented by Ioannis Georgalis, PhD Candidate at the University of Crete and member of the HCI Laboratory of ICS-FORTH, received the Best Student Paper Award at the 3rd International Conference on Pervasive and Embedded Computing and Communications Systems (PECCS 2013, Barcelona, Spain 19-21 February 2013).

The research results presented in the paper have been produced in the context of a collaborative effort between the Human Computer Interaction Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science of FORTH and the Meme Media Laboratory of Hokkaido University, Japan in the area of Ambient Intelligence and Pervasive Computing. This work proposes a new programming model for implementing the functionality of ambient intelligence environments. In this context, it defines a new event-based, dynamic programming language that allows for simple and effective descriptions of autonomous computing abstractions, called smart objects, and introduces comprehensive interaction strategies, implemented in the proposed language, through which executable smart object federations can be used for simulating and implementing ambient intelligence scenarios.

The paper’s authors are: Ioannis Georgalis (Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory of ICS-FORTH), Professor Yuzuru Tanaka (Hokkaido Univeristy, Japan), Professor Emeritus Nikolaos Spyratos (University of Paris-South) and Professor Constantine Stephanidis (ICS-FORTH and University of Crete).
