Arkadi Monastery

Rethymnon, Crete, Greece

Since August 2016

Arkadi Monastery is a national sanctuary in honor of Cretan resistance to Ottoman Empire, which ruled the island for more than two hundred years. Over the years, Arkadi Monastery aims to acquaint visitors with the Holocaust of Arkadi in 1866. After 150 years the old museum of the Monastery was renovated and reopened on the 9th of November 2016, incorporating innovative technologies implemented by the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas under the initiative of the World Council of Cretans (WCC), as presented below:

  • Infocloud is  a system that  comprises a collection of keywords, images and video thumbnails regarding biographies of important people who honoured the work of the Monastery, a tour guide that highlights areas of interest and poems of great writers through the ages. The information is displayed on a very large touch screen and presented in constant flow.
  • Peridexio is a system that offers Arkadi Monastery’s visitors the possibility of exploring an object and/or a subject in depth.
  • Museum Guide is a mobile application that aims to guide the visitor through the Monastery via an interactive map. The application offers an updated catalogue of recent pictures and descriptive text of the Monastery. The application is available worldwide on Google Play Store and AppStore unter the name “Arkadi Monastery”.
