“Herakleion – 40 Centuries of History” – Porta Panigra

Heraklion, Crete

Since December 2025

The Human–Computer Interaction Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH-ICS), in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion, developed an innovative project aimed at bringing the public closer to the history of the city. The exhibition entitled “Herakleion – 40 Centuries of History” is hosted in the Gate of Pantokrator, one of the most emblematic sections of Heraklion’s Venetian fortifications. Through five (5) thematic interactive systems, visitors are given the opportunity to explore different historical periods of the city.

Specifically, an Interactive Map based on the historical map of Maneas Klontzas (17th century) was developed, presenting points of interest of the Venetian Period organized by category. Users have the ability to select a point of interest via a touch screen in order to be shown an indicative image accompanied by relevant descriptive information.

In addition, a second interactive map was developed, which depicts, by category, the Venetian, Ottoman and modern monuments of the city of Heraklion. Each monument is accompanied by rich photographic material and detailed descriptions, offering users a comprehensive picture of the historical and cultural heritage of the city. At the same time, important archaeological excavations carried out in Heraklion are shown, with a detailed presentation of the architectural findings and their significance. Also, tour routes are suggested for visitors of the city.

Finally, three (3) interactive Info Kiosks were designed and implemented, each of which presents multimedia content, adapted to its thematic unit. Through historical and modern photographs, accompanied by rich information material and texts, aspects of the historical development of the city from prehistory to the modern era are highlighted. In this way, visitors have the opportunity to navigate through different historical periods and gain an overall picture of their cultural and historical significance. In particular, the first interactive kiosk covers the period from Minoan Crete to the Second Byzantine Period, the second one the period of Venetian rule, while the third presents the fate of the monuments of Heraklion in modern times.
