1,500,000 visitors in 300 European cities participate every last Friday of the month of September in Researchers’ Night, an event which takes place every year all over Europe and Greece, since 2005. Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas hosts the event in Heraklion, Crete, in its main building.
In 2018 the Ambient Intelligence Programme of the Institute of Computer Science presented AmiSim: Facilitating a Virtual Reality Tour, Smart Exhibit Showcase and AmIDriver, a system that simulates the lake Stymphalia, with the special amphibian reed cutter machine being illustrated at the bottom of the display. The user directs the machine using augmented controls (gear, steering wheel) in order to clean the lake from large areas of reed-beds. This application aims to visualize the process of restoring Lake Stymfalia and creating open water surfaces for the fish and bird species in order to maintain the balance of the ecosystem.
